Question...

I am needing to replace the stock turbo on my 01 f350.. the gears are Yukon 4:10 and I am running 37x13.5 with a 6” lift. I have the banks intake and am aloso replacing the down pipe and the pedestal to a non ebpv..and suggestions on what turbo? I have read about the Garrett 38r and BD thruster II and both are really good. The truck is all stock engine wise. Also, looking at fuel separator and jack brake...there is no cat or muffler as it is exempt...

Please give me some info before I go and get the wrong set up..

Do you need to pass CA smog in your area?

38R looks similar to a stock Garrett so a casual smog tech may not notice. BD turbo comes in a CA smog version but I've heard it's nothing special. A spiffy new billet wheel in your stocker may be all you need. Unless you are going to larger injectors and tunes.

If you want an exhaust brake keep the EBPV and get a decel tune to use it as such. Works pretty well on mine, great when towing and faced with a long steep descent.

Need a better idea of your goals and budget to make better recommendations.

I have also thought about just cleaning the housing and replacing with the riff-raff wheel...but thanks for the suggestions. No on the injectors as it is to much for a weekend puller. Just the turbo is surging and about ready to go..

You could do a 360 bearing kit and SPX wheel from SPTurboost. Kevin there is very helpful and puts out a great product.

I used the RiffRaff 4/4 wheel with a high flow outlet and 360 bearing kit and the turbo is much improved from stock. I can peak at around 32 PSI and sustain 28 PSI towing heavy up a grade.

Just because your turbo is on its way out does not mean that you cannot pull it back in and get it going stronger than ever.

I have a 38r and i'm pretty happy with it. If I had to do it over again I would spend a couple hundred more for a KC38R.

Ok I talked to Kevin at spturbos and I am going with the Powerstroke 7.3 turbo billet wheel CHRA from them.. it comes complete and is a little more aggressive then the wicked wheel 2. Now I just need to order the deleted ebpv pedestal and start taking apart the old one. I have the down pipe and power elbow already and then finding a person to sandblast the OEM housing to clean it up.

Dorman or International are the two most popular choices. I went with the Dorman, but others that don't want to "risk it" go with the International. Dorman are on Amazon and International are on RiffRaff.

It seems that most are happy with the updated Dorman's now.

Go with the Dormans you wont regret it, the remaining 4 7.3 at work all have Dorman bellow up pipes with no failures.

Yes the doorman hardware issues where the screws would bottom out has been resolved and properly addressed I forget exactly how but IIRC they made it so the screws are the correct length and all that, I am planing on picking up a set soon after my front end conversion is complete...

They opened up the end of the bolt holes instead of leaving them blind, that way the bolt can never bottom out.

Like other have said, unless you really have a desire to install only the IH version and spend twice as much, then the Dorman’s, for once, are a very good option that a lot of people have installed with great results too.....
