transmission output speed sensor part number

My wife has a 2012 Expedition XLT 2wd. About a week ago, the car started acting funny. The wrench icon came on, the dash threw all sorts of errors, and it ended up with P0720 error code.

Turned the vehicle off, and turned it back on and everything returned to operating normally. It did it once more, and we limped it a parts store. The P0720 error code said the transmission output speed sensor.

After a few days, the code went away and the car continued to drive normally. Took the vehicle on a 20 minute trip out of town, and it did it 3 times while I was driving.

No loss of power, just a wrench, dash lights, and no speedometer. Limped it home at about 1800 RPM (because the speedometer wasn't working).

Talked to a few people. The mechanics ranged from $450-800 to fix the issue. On most vehicles, the transmission output speed sensor is a 20 minute fix requiring a a wrench.

On this one, it looks like I have to drop the transmission pan and pull out another part to get to it.

Anyone have the part number of that transmission output speed sensor for the 2012 Expedition?

I'd rather fix the problem on my own and not spend $450-$800.

Try asking a tranny shop, they're more transmission specific in their knowledge and abilities.

The P0720 error code said the transmission output speed sensor.
You need to look closer, it probably said OSS circuit.. That means the fault code does not distinguish between the sensor, its wiring, or the PCM. Making that discernment is the job of the technician so as to properly diagnose the fault instead of just replacing parts and hoping to get lucky sooner rather than later.

Before going any further, you probably need to 1) check for open recalls on your VIN and 2) review TSB 13-6-8 to see if it applies to your truck.

End result quite late... you can probably buy the part, but the dealer had to do something to get it work properly. I ended up taking it a mechanic that wasn't a dealer, and they had to haul it to the dealer to do something. Got out for about $800, though it probably should have been more expensive.
