I have a 2005 Ranger 2 WD automatic transmission. When I start climbing a hill the transmission shifts down way to soon as far as I am concerned. I would like to Push on the gas to climb these mild hills but the engine shifts down so soon and Revs awefull high to maintain highway speed. Does anyone else Have this problem? Is there a fix for it? Oh and my engine is a 3.0 v6.
i hate that about automatics, had a astro van that would sometimes do that, would drop down 2 gears to 2nd when trying to pass someone, actually would slow down while the motor revved to the moon. it also had a delayed shift to 2nd when cold. ended up trading it before anything else happened. might try a fluid/filter change.
Automatics suck.. literally. They suck the life out of en engine. I have two 3.0 Rangers here and neither has much trouble climbing small hills without downshifting, the truck with 4.10 gears doesn't even lose any speed, both have manual transmissions.
^+1 on checking the tranny fluid level & condition & changing it if it's time.
If the fluid level & condition are ok ^+1 on did the problem come about suddenly after some event, or slowly over time.
Seeing as how this is a 05 diagnostic system that's rather sophisticated & monitors a lot of things, use, borrow, or come by the inexpensive ELM scan tool as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html as it can scan All of the vehicle computer/controllers like the tranny controller, for trouble code clues. Post All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot. Let us know what you find.
