Fuel sending unit orientation.

Having some fuel gauge issues. Grounding the sending wire, the gauge works fine.

Thought maybe I had a bad sending unit so I replaced it. Installed the new one in the same orientation as the old one. The new one, fuel level reads the same way. Only goes up to about 1/4 tank on the gauge. I took the old unit, with it out of the tank, connected the wires, and moved the float by hand and the gauge reacted as intended. So now, I am wondering if the float is hanging on something? Is there a correct orientation to install this thing? Float pointing towards the passenger side, or should it be pointed towards the driver side when installing??

I was wondering if maybe someone replaced it in the past, and put it in pointing the wrong way?? Or does it matter? I installed the new one the same way. Thought I would ask before removing the new one and turning it 180 degrees. Suppose I could answer my own question by doing just that ... but figured I would ask first.

Just noticed the pickup tube to one side ... so only one way to install the unit. Any chance it's getting caught on the side of the tank?

Yea if the float is installed on the wrong side of the wire arm it can rub on the back of the tank.

There's no way to put the sending unit on cause the screws our spaced for index so it only goes on one way.

If the sending unit is working as it should with jumper wires out of the tank, then check the way the float is on the wire arm. My float is facing the dash.

I've bought new sending units that failed a few days of use.

The new one our china junk.

I both a nos one for my in-laws 70 ranger paid 125. for it but worked perfect.

Keep checking ebay for a nos ane buy it..

Figured it out ... pulled the new one out. Found that there is too much resistance for the float to overcome in order to raise the rod up. So the float is staying submerged. I pulled the float off, stuck it on the old unit, reinstalled and works great now. Old unit moves freely. Cheap Chinese garbage. Suppose I could pull it apart and find why the rod is stiff to move. I'll just toss it in the parts bin for later if needed. :P

Aw same troubles, I has for 50 bucks.

I open mind and it had a little push button spring is to strong am jammed it up.

shxt caned it kept the float.

Keep an eye out for a nos one like what I got for my in-laws..

I'm now using one from VDO that matches my after market fuel gauge.

As, I custom made a dash clusters with all VDO gauges.

The auxiliary fuel tank sending unit has a pickup tube, the in-cab fuel tank sending unit does not.
