Towing/ def question

I hate to post this, on a 2017 f350 drw, I left San Antonio with a full tank of def and 110 gallons of fuel. Towing a 4 door jeep on my equipment trailer combined weight around 13000. Had to stop in 700 miles and put fuel and def, then drove to Vegas and back to San Antonio. Down to 292 till empty on def I’m guessing 1600 miles on that tank of def.

I now hear the injector clicking real loud at idle as posted by another poster. Loaded with jeep from sa to Vegas and empty from Vegas to sa. Averaged 7.1 going and 11.7 coming back with empty trailer. This is the only picture of my setup I have on my phone. I did the trip to Colorado and back and never had to put def so this seems out of the norm.

2017 f350 DRW. 4.10 gears now have 36,500 miles, 35x12.50x20 tires and wheels.

In 5000 miles this summer, about 3000 towing on that oil change, I burned through 3/4 of a tank, added 5 gallons of DEF, and ended up ending with less than a half tank. I estimate using 7-8 gallons in that 5000 miles, 3000 towing truck and trailer and I was only at a gross combined weight of 17,000 lbs.

So, yeah, 4.10s, towing at that weight trailer, 35"s, I can see that kind of use overall. Does seem to be high non towing, perhaps have them pull codes and make sure everything checks out but these things do burn a lot of DEF especially when towing and the higher the ambient temps, perhaps it was able to use more DEF and less fuel to burn off the DPF.

Def doesn't help cleaning the filter (it is injected while driving) when you go through regen extra fuel gets burned to raise temperature in the filter and clean it

I realize that, but its DEF is an after treatment in the exhaust to prevent the DPF clogging and NOx. Depending on his temps pulling, very little extra fuel to clean DPF will be required, lots of DEF will be though....

No clicking or ticking injectors here, such a quiet and smooth diesel... but my truck does likey the DEF!.

Seems like 3X (or more) faster when (heavy) towing!. On a full tank of DEF, I'll get 2,000 miles out of her, but not much more. Unhitched, I swear the gauge never moves. Yes, I do pull heavy and with a wind drag of 13'5" height that surely is not considered very aerodynamic. lol.

I just returned tonight from 2300 round trip with this rig from Iowa to Ottawa Canada and back over the last 4 days. Started with nearly full DEF tank and added 2.5 gallons on way back. Still about 1/3 tank left. Almost all Interstate and set cruise at 72/73 mph entire trip and averaged 9.4 mpg. A dream rig to drive.
