I have a 1995 Ford F150 w/a 4.9L engine. My nephew offered to do all the mechanical in the engine compartment which looks immaculate. Now comes the engine control module. I took the ECM to Autozone and asked for an aftermarket replacement. In California, the VIN number is presumably used to program the refurbished ECM. I asked if this was all there was to it. I now know retailers know less about cars than I do and I am a Dummies person when it comes to cars. (The 1994 Ford F150 pickup I had went 297K). I purchased the ECM and gave up the core. When the replacement ECM arrived I had it installed and the truck ran very, very rough. I went to a Ford dealer's Service Dept and was told that I had to have the "Calibration Code" to complete the programming correctly. That Calibration Code was on the core I returned. AutoZone indicated that they had no way to trace the PCB inside the metal box which is the ECM complete. I'm at a loss.
I am looking at 2 options. 1) Determine how many other computers are in my truck and 2) find an electronic/auto electrician to get a second opinion for a solution. I would be grateful for anyone's input. At this point I have half of a possible solution but not a half of a probable solution. Pls advise.

Actually it should also be on the drivers door pillar or door edge.
