Hi, I am located on East coast of Australia.I am trying to register a 2003 Ford Explorer 4.6l .In order to do so the authorities need to know the engine number.I am finding it very hard to locate. The Ford head office people are unable to supply details of where it is on the engine block.I know the Engine number appears on the VIN, so I know what it should be, but I still am unable to locate. Can anybody out there advise exactly where I can find it.Many thanks.
AFAIK Ford didn't put engine numbers, VINs or "motor numbers" on engines, except in certain high performance cars of the late '60s. I don't know where to send you for an engine serial number. Do they not give you an "no number" option?
I thought these might have a serial number, but I don't see a number labeled as such. You might be able to use the number found on such a sticker if your motor still has it:
Hi, the VIN is 1FMDU75W73ZA64995, and I believe the engine number is the last 8 figures of the VIN. The problem is our authorities here require that we prove the engine number is what is stated on our documents ( ie, registration papers). They do this to make sure that the engine hasn't been changed /stolen. Therefore it is important for me to find where on the engine block the numbers are.Cheers.
With that VIN, I come up with the original engine serial number as: 110272787881. As far as where you will find this number on the engine, it may be on a label affixed to one of the valve covers, where you would see the engine code for this vehicle identified as 2G-306-AA. I believe you will also see a bar code below that number. And below that, would be the engine serial number specific to the VIN of the vehicle you've provided.
Hi again,
I found the bar code sticker on the side of the motor, it was 211102 72787881, the engine code was G - 306 - AA. I was not able to locate the 8 digit figures for the engine number on my documents, ie, 3ZA64995. So,it seems I am able to confirm the details you gave me.Would you be able to tell me where you obtained this information from to support my case. Cheers Kevin.
: PS I did find the following stamped on the motor below the bar code sticker
RF1L2E - 6090D22D, was reading it upside down and in a mirror,so that was the best I could make out. Cheers.
If you go to any Ford dealership and explain your situation to them, you can have any service department staff run what's called an "OASIS" printout for you. Once OASIS for your vehicle is accessed, simply request that they navigate on the screen to Warranty Claim Details which will open another window. From there, simply access Detailed Vehicle Specification which will in turn, open up another screen which will contain the original engine serial number as I've provided in my previous post.

The numbers I highlighted in bold coloured font from your initial reply appears to coincide with my initial reply below:

So as you can see, wherever you were able to find those numbers, combined with printed documentation that is proprietary to Ford Motor Company (ie the OASIS printed copy from any dealership as mentioned above) in your possession should be more than ample proof that the engine in this vehicle is original to it.
Your question makes me wonder what would happen in the event you were to purchase a used vehicle that has had the engine replaced, with either one from a scrapyard, or any brand X remanufactured unit (neither of which would have the original engine's serial number obviously) at some point? How would you be able to register such a vehicle?

In the late 1980's, in an effort to reduce auto thefts, the US Gov't mandated that the auto makers had to have VIN's marked on multiple parts, including engine blocks, trans cases, axle housings and sheet metal.
Most sheet metal had tags glued to it with the complete VIN on it. These tags could not be peeled off in one piece.
What percentage of the population including people that worked in body shops and for auto wreckers that actually bothered to look for the VIN's, was probably very low.
Since the VIN's are different for vehicles not sold in the US or Canada, I dunno if their governments mandated the same thing.
