flat bed or fleetside

I have an 87 250 with a rusted bed( wheelwells and lower rear corners) in my opinion it is a lost cause. i have a 10'steel flat bed that is in excellent condition( headache rack and toolboxes ) but i dont know what it would look like on the 87 body. i plan on looking for a replacement bed, up to '96 will fit right? but here in the rust belt of ohio they are scarce. the cab is excellent. i guess im just looking for your thoughts on this. i use this truck to tow and ocasionaly haul scrap and junk, i know the flat bed will limit what i can haul but i want my truck to look as good as it should. thanks

LAST EDITED ON 22-May-01 AT 10:18 PM (EST)[p]Flatbeds are great. You can use them in multiple ways. You can use them in the form of a stake body, if needed. You can make a box or set a box on them if you are in need of a small box truck. Like the above post, you don't have to worry too much about scratching them up. If you do, you can get some MAB rust-o-lastic gloss black paint and paint it right back to new. This is what we do with our large F-700 Flatbed trucks just about every year. Makes them look real good. Then, the only thing that I would be concirned about is that the flatbed that you put on your truck looks good and is installed properly. You don't want anything too wide or too long.
On the other side of the coin, you might be able to find a bed at a scrap yard and bolt it right up. Then again, you would have to paint it to make it match.
Good luck.

I am repairing a bed from an 86 and it really isn't hard, new wheel wells are $46 canadian each and I have no idea what the corner pieces are. If you weld or have a bud who welds you basically have a good box. It saves you buying a whole new box. If you wanted to you could sell the flat deck and probably have enough money to fix the box and then get it painted. Just my idea.

Good luck

Look in to the plats for a flatbed first ..In Mich. it will have to have a com.plat if you don't have a stock box on your truck.....

I say go with the flatbed. It sounds like a better way to go.

Although it may not make much difference, by cousin tells me that flatbed's have cheaper insurance than pickup beds. Don't know why for sure.

Flat beds are nice, but they are heavy and will eat into your payload. Another thing to consider is that any bed from an F-series truck through '96 will work (of course there may be minor differences in styling) and there are a lot of those around that are not rusted out yet.
