Help with wiring harness

I have a 1988 F150 reg cab LB 4x4 5speed 4.9 I-6. I recently bought this truck, its been sitting at least 2 yrs since it last ran. When I bought it, I put a new battery in and tried to start it and quickly realized a electrical burning smell and unhooked the battery. Then realized I had hooked the battery up backwards. Well hooking it up correctly, there was a wire connected to the solenoid that burned up when it was connected. I took the truck to a good mechanic friend, he put a new solenoid on, and has tested everything possible (and made several other repairs along the way) for the wiring only to discover there is a short somewhere in the main engine wiring harness. I'm trying to save him some time from testing every wire in that harness. I would like to find another harness in a junkyard but can't find the exact year and model. What variations of year and/or engine can I use? I know you can't take the harness from a 6 to an 8, but can one be used from and 8 to a 6 cylinder? Also, if you have any suggestions of anywhere else I can look for a harness?
