I'm getting ready to order new tires. Looking at either the Goodyear Duratrac or Cooper ST Maxx in 295/70/17. Will the spare fit under the truck if I order 5 tires in that size?
If you’re willing to buy a fifth tire now, maybe leave the stock spare where it is and use it until you can replace the blown tire with your new fifth tire. I say that because I’ve only had to use a spare once (and I’m in my 50’s).
That being said, I’m pretty sure I saw a post here recently saying that the stock spare was always the smallest size available (so if you have the option of 17,18,19, or 20” tires on your truck, the spare would always be 18”). Makes sense, but don’t know if it’s true.
Well my current tires are 245/75/17. No idea on what size the spare is, I haven't used it. We bought the truck earlier this year and I'm wanting to go up in tire size. If I don't replace the spare, there will be a pretty significant size difference in the tire should I need it. I figured it would be best to buy 5 tires, then every time I rotate tires, the spare gets put into rotation to keep equal wear on the tires.
I have used spares many times due to dirt road living. I just haven't had to use one on the truck yet (knock on wood).
Figure out what size is on your spare, then look up the diameter of both your current spare and the size you plan to go to. Get the diameter difference, divide it in half and that is the diameter the new size would be all the way around compared to your current spare tire and youll be able to measure from your current spare to see if you have enough room.
The diameter of the 295/70/17 is 33.26 inches. My 2012 has LT275/70R18E, including the spare. It's diameter is 33.16 inches. It's snug up under there, but I'd be willing to bet there's more than 1/10th of an inch of room in there.
This is a 37x13.50x20 Toyo RT on a stock 20" wheel in the stock spare tire location on my truck. It just needs a heat shield between it and the exhaust. Otherwise there is plenty of room under there.
Not my current truck but my old lifted BMF#1 ( 2007 chevy 1/2 new body style ) I had 35s on it with a 6 inch lift. I bought a fifth wheel and tire. It fit in the spare tire cradle. I would assume it would fit, but i think you would need a heat shield. Im interested to see what kinda of heat shield is used. Maybe 89LX306 could enlighten us. Im thinking about doing this mod in the future.

I don't currently have a heat shield on there. That was a test fit I did while rotating my tires to see if a 37" tall tire would fit under there. I just snapped a pic since a lot of people ask about it.
When I do get around to it...I will either bend up something to clamp to the tailpipe or just bolt something to the side of the receiver hitch. Either would likely work fine. Just need to create a barrier with an air gap.
