In post #4, the '53-'55 diagram bill posted shows the lighter ("A" in the cut below) with what looks like a light ("B") plugged into the harness ("C"). This looks just like what I have.
It is further reinforced by his post #9, the '56 diagram. It may not have had the original lighter when I got it back in 1975. It had one, but it wasn't hooked up and the wires were just twisted around the cowl vent handle brace.
I held the harness up to the dash and the light barely reaches to the lighter hole, but it does reach.
Looks like those that said 'lighter' are right.
Bob gets bonus points for using the correct term "Dispatch box".
Just about any auto parts store, including NAPA. That one is the old school type, but you can still get them. The newer ones have a lighted ring and LED lit.
One question... How does that bulb light up the cigar lighter? Does it light a ring around the outside of it or does it light light up inside of the lighter. I am not sure if I've ever seen a Ford truck lighter lit up.

I haven’t put power to it, but it looks like just the inside lights up. You would never see it unless the lighter was out.

You are correct about the not seen. The inside of the socket is illuminated with lighter removed. My 53 deluxe cab has one that works although the element doesn't. Another project.
Both of my trucks are plain Jane standard models. So there is a plug covering the hole. No frills..... However they both have electric wipers and my 55 F350 has a foot operated optional stock windshield washer and factory turn signals that cancel them selves. Why a farmer paid extra for those options I don't know.
