Maybe this is my problem, I'm not punching deep enough? I'll give that a shot next time since I've always just broken the outside metal skin.

I'll have to give that a try also. Good suggestion Rodney!

I've been using Fumoto's drain valve for over 10 years and absolutely love them.

Has nothing to do with draining the filter. That’s the PIA.

I always break the filter loose first before punching the hole. Just to be safe. Then after draining it for a little bit, loosen the filter enough you get air flowing into the top of it. You'll get some run down the side, but not much. The oil cooler drains too, so it's more oil coming out than just what the filter holds.

I skipped the hole punch this last time just to see how much time it would save. Didn't spill anything, but the oil rushing over all sides of the filter made for a slippery situation where an spill would happen sooner or later. I'll stick to the hole and have a beer while it drains method from now on.

Just did mine today. I poked a hole in bottom of filter and let it drain till it stopped. Then poked hole deeper into filter and about the same amount of oil ran out of filter. Unscrewed filter and was dry, and clean as could be. Will do it this way from now on.

Poked a hole in the bottom of the filter from the bottom or from the side?

I will have to try poking the hole deeper into the filter in 5,000 miles.
Thanks

Deuce, I use a long screwdriver and poke the hole, in the bottom, from the side, let it drain, then hit it again until it starts to drain more oil. When its done draining it is empty, with no mess removing.
