Yes any triton 05+ was 3valve and if the 5.4 could not keep up with the 460 then there is something seriously wrong with it
... or the driver just isn't using the powerband. Like I said, my '08 5.4 was gutless, but I didn't wind it out enough to get it in the powerband. I'd drop the ZF6 down to 4th gear at 70 mph. That brought it a little under 3500 rpm and it would at least not seem like the Bronco being towed was going to pass it. But I really needed to drop it down to 3rd, which would've brought the rpm up to 5500.
If I'd known what the power curve was on that engine I wouldn't have ordered it with the 3.73 gears it had. (Of course, if I knew what the power curve was I wouldn't have ordered the engine, or probably even the truck, at all.)
But the bottom line for this discussion is that it wouldn't surprise me if a TRUCK driver doesn't even get a 5.4L into it's powerband.
I use my 92 F250 460 4x4 to pull a 10K+ lb boat, and a lighter car hauler on occasion. Truck has over 270K on untouched engine, 3rd E4OD. It was an oilfield and later farm truck prior to me, I bought it when the 2nd trans was out.
It seems to pull best and be happiest in the 1500-2500 rpm range, which I like. Neighbor pulls a 7-8K boat to same location with an 06 GM 6.0. Loves the truck but hates the high rpm powerband.
