I have a 1971 f-100. As my steering wheel is cracked , I would like to know what newer year truck wheel will fit? Also, will ford car steering wheels fit? Thanks all
When I "traded-up" from my 73 F-100 to my 71 F-100 I swapped a lot of things including the steering wheel.
I had posted questions to other users here to ask what the diameter of the wheels on the 68-72 wheels. ONe answer that I got was the same size as my 73 wheel. (My 73 didn't have power steering, and I was trying to find out if the size of the wheel was different with power steering.)
Ironically, I've noticed that there were older wheels used on the 68 and maybe later that are a little larger. So I don't know if the 71 and 73 used the same wheel or this guy gave me a bogus number.
But in any case, the 73 wheel fit on my 71 just fine.
I think they started using the two spoke ones in 1970 and they were pretty much the same up through the mid seventys. I know 76 for sure. I had a 74 and 76 both new and those steering wheels both cracked wide open the first winter. Every one I have ever owned was cracked. I have replace a couple with a wood rimed 3 spoke from Superior. I got them both at NAPA and they not only look nice but are fatter to hang onto. I have one of those leather wraps on my 68 because I have big hands and those old pencil thin steering wheels are kindof lame. I would be tickled pink to get $61.00 for my old one to put toward a custom wheel.
Yep, the 67-69, + or - have quite different steering wheels than the 70's models. The later two spoke wheels are smaller dia, and are made of a slightly different material I think. More rubbery?
Prone to crack easy with UV rays. The older wheels are three spoke, and are the older "60's" style harder material. Standard with just a horn cap, the upper models included a chrome horn ring. Heck, if you don't mind a different wheel, there are loads of them at any large auto parts. Many real high tech looking...You can get a new high tech modern looking wheel, which is very comfortable for less than a $100. They also made the more standard looking chrome wheels, black grip, or woodgrain. Most of these require an install kit. MK

Same problem here- I did something by accident that was cool, though.
When I got my truck, it had one of those wraps on the steering wheel, the kind with the vinyl lace you run around it. The guy who put it on didn't even follow the pattern and when he was done, he wrapped the excess around the bottom several times instead of cutting it off. So I went to the store and bought one, same style in black, and instead of taking the old one off, I trimmed the excess off that he had left behind, and installed the new cover over it with the new lace. It gave me a bit more to hold on to, is very comfortable and feels cushioned. It completely hid the one underneath so you can't even tell it's there.
Hey jds71 that's a great idea. I have installes several of those over the years and I am just starting to figure out how to get them on right. Tieing it off so it will stay and not having a big obnoxious knot is a trick.
