2007 Explorer - Failsafe/Limp Mode in Heavy Rain
2007 Explorer - 4.0L - 151,000 miles
- Last night I drove through a very heavy rainstorm and my wrench light came on. I noticed that the truck would not go into OD gear after that and once the rain eased up a few miles down the road, I pulled over and shut off the truck.
- I restarted and everything seemed fine (no lights on dash and running normal).
- I get another 2 or 3 miles down the road and the wrench light and check engine both came on and the truck went into limp mode.
- Again I shut it off for about 10-15 minutes and nose around the engine looking for wet spots, broken vacuum lines, broken wires, etc. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
- Start up again and now the engine light stays on, but I can I least accelerate. But, it goes into limp mode once more.
- I shut down, wait another 10-15, and go again. Check engine light stays on again, but this time I drive the last 20 miles or so to get home without any more limp modes.
I checked the truck this morning and the light is still on, I haven't driven it yet but the truck otherwise sounds normal.
I have not taken the truck over to Autozone as of yet to run the codes, but I wanted to see if anyone here has gotten any real ideas. Going through a search has got an overwhelming number of possibilities of what it could be (Speed sensors, ABS, MAF sensor, coil pack, spark plugs, Throttle body, TPP, etc.)
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I got the codes from Autozone. The system is throwing a pile of Throttle codes:
P0222, P060B, P2104, P2110, P2135, P0068, P0102, P2111, P2112
Based on these, it sounds like the Relay box housing all the throttle relays got soaked and needs to be pulled apart and dried out.
So my next question is: Where do I locate this relay box?
