Gentlemen and certainly Ladies: I need some help. I have an 83 F250 4x4 with a 351 C engine. I want to upgrade to a 460 with and AOD trans. My question is this: Do i stay with the Borg Warner T-Case or is there something better I should be using ? Also I have this clunk in the what I believe is the front end or maybe mounts not sure. It's only when you take off from a stop. It has weird mount system on the T-Case not the trans. never seen this type of mounting system. It has 2 round mounts upper and lower that sits on a cross member. Any info will be helpful.
You can't mate the 460 to a AOD, the AOD was never made to go behind a 460. Even if you did adapt it, there would be another big clunk from the AOD during your first burnout with a 460 in front of it.
There is no overdrive automatic that will stand up to the 460 except the E4OD and you will need a aftermarket trans controller to run that transmission. It would be a nice setup, but a little expensive.
There are others out there as well. Hopefully the experts can let you know which one is best.
I've been considering an E40D swap for my 86 f250 as well. It's on the wish list right next to installing a turbo. I guess I need to install my coolant filter and PS hi pressure hose first since they are sitting in my shop.
Anyways, here's a few links for info on swapping the E4OD:

IMHO you should "beef" up an E4OD when it's behind a 460.

If they are rebuilt, most E4OD's are rebuilt to 1995+ specs, when they fixed most of the problems. Not too bad of a transmission after they updated the problem areas.

I hear what you're saying.
Although the 1994 F250 with a 460 and E4OD that I used to own was not that good.
I was the second owner and I knew the first so I had the history. Ford did the upgrades because he had so much trouble with it.
I still had problems with it. Had the solenoid pack replaced three times and one of those times it took out the ECM.
The E4OD in my 1992 Bronco is great. Would love one in my 86!
