tuning question
Today the old girl hit the road for the first time in many years. For the most part it was uneventful, the turn signal doesn't have any detents left but the was pretty easy to watch. Now, when I would stop somewhere for a few minutes it was hard to start back up. It turned over fine, but needed to crank for a while before firing. When it's cold it fires right up. Any ideas what can cause this?
Thanks,
Matt
because the engine is nice and warmed up. On mine anyway, i have to rely on pumping the gas a bit. I would suggest checking the idle mixture ajustment, the fast idle ajustment, and the curb idle ajustment. Your fast idle may be set low and when it drops out, there may not be enough curb idle to start it when its warm.
A few suggestions anyway. Timing is a factor also. I set mine at 6deg btdc at 550 rpms(curb idle) with the vacume pulled off the dist..
As for hard re-starting. Mine was like that this past summer. When it gets warm out, and I shut it off. It like boils the gas out of the carb and then it takes a few seconds til it finally starts again. It runs flawless, but it did have this problem. I did put a new Holley 4bbl on it, so I should not have that problem next summer(plus I put an insolator plate under it to keep the heat off).
The turn signal switch is an easy fix.
Glad to hear your trip went well. They're old, but I drive them anywhere!

I'm not sure if you have fixed it yet, but it sounds as if your choke is staying on too long. Mine did that before. If I stopped anywhere after the engine was warm it was hard to restart because it was flooding. Since you only stopped for a few minutes, it shouldn't cool down enough to need the choke again unless it is extremly cold.

I have given up on this carb. While visiting my parents over Thanksgiving, my Dad gave me a 4 bbl intake he had lying around. I have been trying to find a carb for it since, but haven't had much luck. I tried E-bay first, but got discouraged pretty quick. Right now, the old Ford sits and I am waiting to hear from my neighbor who has a lead on an autolite and a holley 750 for me. I am anxious to get back to driving the Ford and have also rounded up the power steering conversion parts to put on when I swap the manifold.
Just trying to get a carb right now
Matt
