Well is was Feb 2017 when I started the overhaul, and it is just about done except for a few finishing few touches.
New crate engine, 5.4, new bumpers with rigid lights and 12,000# warn, new body mounts, new Readylift 3.5" , new skyjackers shocks, Rooster 2.0 Rack with 3000# winch with gun sights and bullets, check it out up close! ( lights need to be install yet) new brakes, rotors and seals, new front drive shaft, new power seat switches, new Toyo tires, Linex Box and Fenders, New custom running boards, mounted to the frame in 3 places, for bush wacking and moose hauling... Should be a great bush rig!
I could not have done it without my Buddy Greg and his great shop and staff.
Check out the pic's and let me know what you think!
Looks like a hell of a bunch of work. Great job!! Looks really good. A truck always means so much more to ya when you have that kind of blood sweat and tears in it. Congrats on a job well done
Thanks a bunch! It was a bit of work but now it is more or less like new, so it should last a while! I paid $7500 for the truck (325km) and now it is worth about $25K but what can you buy with a total overhaul for $25K? and get it the way you want too. That was my thought process anyways! HAHAHAHHAHA
That's an awesome build-out! I like how you maintained the raw functionality of the truck (not putting over the top monster tires and all that jazz). And, as you said, it is the way you want it! Well done!
She's looking good Brad. The bumpers look pretty good, Can't say I have seen that headache rack you have anyplace, but it seems pretty beefy so looks like it will last a long time. I will feel a little sorry for anyone who crashes into you, cause with that front, their vehicle might no fair too well ...lol... but lets hope that never happens.
What size winch did you throw on the truck, I can't recall if you mentioned that earlier in the 5.4 area. So did you manage to take er in the bush for hunting season? How did she fair. Throwing a new 5.4 in was a good idea (your under warranty for I think two years right? ) so you can basically go to any Ford dealer if you have an issues engine wise.
Did you use your old radiator or did you throw another one in? I havent really found any good solution to the Ford one and them dame leaky plastic parts on it. Wish Mishimoto would come out with a radiator that was for the 5.4's and one for the 6.2's. Still think the body flexing causes the radiators to **** the bed after a while.
She looks good though man, it's like your driving a whole new truck!
Thanks Tommy Tom! Yah, it is for hunting not show and in the north you have to chain it up! and in the mountains, it is not good to have a big lift with the side slopes ether! I will get some shots this weekend as it is its first bush trip out hunting Elk and Moose! Yahoo!
Thanks Sunuvabug, yes we have done this before with my 1974 crew! this was a bit easier as parts are available and you don't have to make stuff! HAHAHAHAHA Thanks again!
Thanks Pocketlint
Yes if I hit you, it is going to hurt on any end! That rack is totally custom built by a great welder I know, he has a CNC machine as you can tell. The winch is a Warn, 12,000 pounder so no weak link. and like I said maiden bush hunting voyage starting in a few minutes! I will have to let you know how it works out all chained up. pictures and all. I had the rad pressure tested and it was all good, so we just went with it. Hopefully it lasts a bit!!! now you have me worried! HAHAHAHAHHA
wish me luck guys! and Thanks for the great comments too!
Awesome truck! No issues on the maiden hunting trip voyage. The 5.4 is real good on the highway, and even pulling a tandem hydraulic dump trailer ( aka HEAVY) loaded with wood and the outhouse, it still pulled down only to 95KM on a very large hill. I actually thought AI would have been going 60! very pleasant surprise! However with the thing chained up all the way around, it is a real dog! HAHAHAH you actually have to have it in low range to get any rpm out of it, which was really weird. but once we figured that out, it pulled a 30" trailer with two 1000 Commanders in it, with 45 gallon drum of gas and a 6500 generator loaded right up, with a quad in the back. slow, but chewed it way up a steep grade and thru a foot of show into the camp spot. all in all really well. I do think we are going to put in that Detroit locker just to get us that extra traction we are use too!
Saw around 20 moose, a **** ton of mule deer, all with no tags, and over 100 elk, with 4 shooter bulls, but were all on that ridge across from the truck picture at 1787 yard. just a bit far for me! HAHAHAHA
Well glad to see you had a blast on the trip and the truck did well for you first time out. Some people think the 5.4 doesnt have any beef to it, but I think with the right gears and a little tune she can put a little more oomph under the hood.
Looks like you gave ol Rooster a good workout for it's first time in the back country ( looks like up in the foothills from what I gather ) At least you were smart enough to bring chains ( and a porta a potty...lol ) God knows how many guys you see out on a forest road or a lease road sitting there stuck because they thought they could make it and dont realize some of the forest roads dont see much traffic for week hell even months! lease roads are maintained to a point so someone would stumble across em sooner or later.
Looks like some nice scenery, I am sure you guys had a good time rompin around and checkin out the spots for the next trip as well. Now that you know where you saw a lot of game you can always keep it in mind for the next trip. Good to see the investment paid off for you and you have a solid ride good on pavement and the back country.
