I have a 2017 supercab short bed. When unloading some tree branches I noticed the rubber stops that are located near the top of the tailgate opening were loose & as a result were turned the wrong direction. I tried to correct but when I got back home one fell out & the other later did the same. I figured I would be able to push them back in the hole & they would snap back in place but apparently something broke off because they won't reattach. Seems like there should be something in the hole to "accept" them that broke off or fell out. Anyone else have this problem?
I did! I thought I lost a piece too. Place your bumper in the correct position and take a small screw driver or something a little blunted and push the pin back in place. You have to be very careful and NOT push the pin in too far. Just enough to grab. Too much and the pin will not seat.
The one on the right side of my truck kept falling off and was loose. Didn't want to lose it so I first cleaned the rubber and mounting place on the box with denatured alcohol. I then applied an adequate but not excessive amount of Honda motorcycle (handle bar) grip adhesive to the pin and backside of the rubber, pushed it back in and closed the tailgate and left it closed for a day. Hasn't moved since. Left one hasn't moved since new, but I'll do the same thing when it falls out.

good information - don't know why I didn't think of that!
I think once the (push) pin is flexed from falling out they're done.
They removed my bumpers to spray in the Line-X liner and the fall out all the time now.
One side seems to stay in better but the other side I just put in the truck and said the hell w/ it (as it was also preventing the "automatic" tail gate opening operation)....the gate doesnt seem to rattle noticeably w/ only one bumper.
Many have this problem. The issue that I have been able to determine is the push pin isn't very good or the wrong size. I have looked for others with no luck. If I see one loose I can usually take my little finger and relock it into the hole.
I tried to reattach mine but they wouldn't attach securely. I think I'll take them back to the dealer & get them replaced. Probably end up with the same problem in another 6 months.....☹️
My right hand side one fell off like the first week of owning my truck. Looking at the design of the push pin Ford used, I knew it wasn't going to last. I ended up installing rivet nuts and using screws to hold them in.
