Tailgate Bumpers....

I think we had a brief discussion of this in another thread. The two rubber like bumpers on each side or the truck that the tailgate closes upon are held on by one small plastic push pin each. These push pins stay loose and have on occasion fallen off the truck.

Has anyone dealt with this yet? I looked at NAPA to see if they had a fastener that would hold these more securely but no dice. Very small NAPA store however. If anyone has dealt with this I would sure like some suggestions before I lose these bumpers.

Wonder if cleaning everything up and putting a little black RTV on the pin and rubber base before reinstalling would work?

My gripe is with the rubber bumpers under the front of the hood on each side. There's six of them, and 2 have already popped out when drying the truck after washing.

I wonder if you should use an aluminum nut and bolt to prevent galvanic corrosion?

This is totally truck dependent and I personally think warranty issue. My first truck had this problem. I got dealer to look and they did not have a solution. Some times it would drop others fall out.

Second truck not a single issue with them. They are not loose. Don't really move. They work fine thus I think defects.

I am thinking about a short plastic drywall anchor with a short screw. Might play with that tomorrow.

Wasn't there a thought that these rubber bumpers were just there for shipping? One of mine popped off and while I put it back on I considered just taking the other one off instead.

I had one of these rubber bumpers get turned and it jammed the tailgate where I had to force it open. I just went to the dealer and got a new one. It was around $4. It was a bit tighter than the one that I had trouble with.

To me, it appears that this bumper is intentional, to prevent tailgate rattle when closed, and premature wear on the latch mechanism.

The bumpers are intentional and installed on all Ford inscluding older models. My 2008 had them but they where fixed with screws. They appear to hold tension on the tailgate to prevent movement and rubbing.

Clean the surface areas where they contact and use some body trim adhesive.

I just used some 2 stage epoxy. Seems to be holding so far.

I do have some 3M body tape. Might give that a try. No go on the plastic drywall anchors. They got snug but just slid in and out of the hole.

The loaner truck I had for 3 weeks had problems with these. The driver side one was always popping off. It was a Job 1 truck. My truck does not have any issues with them moving or coming off. They are very snug.
