203 on left 205 on right. Are there any other markings on the case body?
Dana/Spicer Model 20
Identify: Single shifter; same casting as the later Model 18; rear output is centered.
Low-Ranges: 2.0, 2.34, 2.46
Lubricant: 85W-90 gear oil
Notes: Versions also appeared in Jeep, IH, Ford, and Chevy 4x4s. Some parts are interchangeable among versions. The ’66-’72 Bronco had the T-shift with 2.46 low-range; ’73-’77 vehicles had the 2.34-geared J-shift variant. The Bronco Model 20’s sliding gear can be combined with Model 18 gears to create a 2.46 low-range in Jeep and IH Model 20s.
This is a Ford NP203 shift pattern, as I understand (i.e. there may be other deviations). Easy to tell a 203 (it's huge, two linkage arms on the driver's side, etc.).
"All Highboys had divorced transfer cases, as opposed to married transfer
cases. A married transfer case is bolted directly to the transmission. A
divorced transfer case is bolted onto its own cross-member, and is
separated from the transmission by a driveshaft. Highboys had Dana 24
part-time transfer cases from 1967-1973, and either the standard NP205
part-time or optional NP203 full-time transfer cases from 1973-1977.5.
The NP205 is the strongest and most desirable factory transfer case.
The Dana 24 is a cast-iron, gear-driven, part-time, 2-speed case with
1.86:1 gears. The NP203 is a chain-driven, full-time, 2-speed case with
2.00:1 gears. The NP205 is a cast-iron, gear-driven, part-time, 2-speed
case with 1.96:1 gears."
Rich, yes my truck is an early '77 with a divorced 203 (and a part time 2WD kit) and two linkage arms. The P-PO gave me the shift pattern I posted, which does match the research I've seen; I'd like to see what NP203 pattern you have that shows both the regular 4x4 and "lock out" 4x4 settings. Unfortunately my truck came with a stupid 8-ball for a shift **** and I'm working on my transfer case's linkage (i.e. it's too sloppy to move like it should). Once I get the linkage correct, (November project) I'll confirm the shift pattern I've been given.
