Hi Folks,
My bench seat which has been rebuilt (new cover and cushions) sits too high for my comfort. Has anyone removed the adjustment from the seat? I gave it a quick look and it doesn't appear to be too difficult. Nothing structural was changed. I can't believe this is how they rode back then.
I haven't, not on purpose at least, but I recently temporarily swapped out my good seat and put in an ancient, worn-out seat rebuilt with "standard" foam. (Yes, I believe the base and CC seats had different foam.)
It sat a couple inches lower. I was surprised at how roomy the cab became!
I was pretty pleased, and thought I might put a thin foam cushion in my good seat. That was until I hit a speed bump and my *** hit the floor ... hard.
In short, with a factory seat, no(unless you got real creative). The rear is already dragging the ground, and while you could cut/weld the front mount shorter, it would rotate the whole seat forward.
When I had my seat done I made sure they didn't make it any thicker than it was originally. I'm 6'4 and there is plenty of head room and it is quite comfortable driving around town. I haven't tried sitting on it for 3 hours straight. The key to a good seat in one of these old trucks is the springs. If they aren't in good shape it will never sit well.
Since seat has been upholstered perhaps an option would be as CropDuster mentioned regarding the bench seat, check with upholstery shop to determine if cost effective to have the bench rebuilt, imagine the cover can be re-used and matter of shortening or replacing the springs??
I ran into same issue and could not come up with a solution using the originals seats. I ended up using the 65 tracks and installing them on an 87 Lariat contoured low profile 40-20-40 bench then taking the 87 seats to upholstery shop, since prior owner and myself made a few changes maintaining original appearance not an issue, pleased with results.
Member's have posted pics of various seat configurations perhaps they can offer advice and pic's.
Been number of years ago, seem to recall 65 thru 72 seat tracks are same. From 67 thru at least the 90's the seats (bench and backs) are wider therefore one should be able to mix and match backs with bench, the issue with the wider bench is 1 of the arm rest should be removed if intend shifting the back forward to access tank area? Anyhow, had an urge to chime in, also link to thread for info, may decided to do something about the seats on my other 65?
I had this bench repaired and recovered not knowing at the time it would sit so high. When I bought the truck the seat was so broken and worn the driver was in a hole. I have plenty of head room but a couple inches lower would be more comfortable. Removing the adjusting mech would solve the problem without forcing the seat into a foreword leaning incline as the back end appears to have room. Rebuilding the seat probably wouldn't be cost effective but I may as well get an estimate from the guys that did the repair work.
Kinda of hard to tell from the angle but how does it compare to this? I noticed your steering column bracket under the dash edge doesn't seem original. Did someone add power steering?
Yes, previous owner installed a CrownVic front end and it's been a major pain in the pants all around. Had I known what I was in for due to this awful mod I'd have passed on this truck.

using the top of the door pockets (or access panel depending on which is present) shows a drastic difference in how high the seating surface is in the OPs pic. His is actually hiding the trim around the pocket while in Chads pic, you can see some of the panel. OPs seat is much thicker. It reminds me of a seat from a bumpside I was swapping into a 66 a few years back and it too was much thicker and didn't leave enough room under the wheel...ended up reverting back to a 65/66 seat.

Reason: Typo
Here are a couple of shots. You can see how low the steering wheel sits which is also a complication to the seat height.
Looks like they did a nice job covering your seat. But looking at your pictures, "unless they stuffed a lot of extra foam in it" it looks like it came from a much newer truck. My seat measures about 3 3/4 inches to the door at the forward corner and about 15 inches off the floor at the highest point at the front.
