98 Ranger Timing Chain Replacement
Hello There,
I am looking at purchasing a 98 ranger 4x4 extended off road package for a song, but it has timing chain problems. I talked with a mechanic who owns his own shop and he says that it requires a specialty tool to change all (4) chains. Has anyone done this and how difficult is it? Does it really need the specialty tool?

98 Ranger Timing Chain Replacement
Hi Giant, welcome to FTE!
You don't mention which engine is in the Ranger....in any case, both 1998 3.0L and 4.0L OHV Ranger motors only have one timing chain.
Haynes Manual says that on 4x4 models, you have to remove the engine(s) in order to properly do the job, but maybe someone else can confirm that.
Timing chains are not a known problem with either engine.

First thing I would do is find a mechanic that really knows what he is doing because like Rockledge said, there is only 1 chain.
