In search of a good ignition coil

Hello all, it's been a while since I posted but I follow once in a while and still work on what I drive..a 1986 Bronco-4.9 powered.
I find myself in need a good current recommendation on a replacement ignition coil. I today bought a new BWD product from the local "o" store that is close, but found that their best quality is only used with full 12 volts and did not perform well on my resisted circuit.
I still have the factory resisted wire in use and don't care to rewire my system for 12 volts at this time.

Any recommendations on a good resisted duraspark II coil replacement?...at a reasonable price..or any price?

The "A" Store don''t carry one anymore either they say. I haven't tried NAPA yet, and i had a little time so wanted to get the best opinions of this topic from guys still running this setup.

thanks for any relevant input...

Bought mine from Napa, Echlin IC21. I bought mine chasing a problem that turned out to not be the coil. My truck is 351W but coil may be the same for the six. Don't know for sure.

I converted my 85 with a 300 to DS2 and I've been running an accel coil since the conversion.

But they couldn’t tell me for sure it would work with the original wiring, But we’ll keep checking into it..thanks for the reply.

Did you use the original supplied coil feed wire?

I'm running an Accel 8140HV coil on my 460 with Duraspark II distributor and box. Potted in epoxy rather than oil filled. Stock coil was too weak to reliably fire iridium plugs, the Accel coil works great.

The Accel 8140HV coil has a .6 ohm primary resistance which is about half of what it should be for a DS2 ignition system.

I should refresh the info on my install..

When I first converted my 86' Bronco to DSII just retained the original TFI coil that came stock and for years now it has played just fine with the better quality NAPA DS spark box, I have always thought of utilizing the stock canister style DSII coil but never got around to changing it before now. I DO have an old greasy coil and bracket I found at a junkyard in the search for parts in the early days of all of this.

In the last week or so this OEM TFI coil is showing the signs of failing when warm..so i have temporarily hooked up the old spare canister I have and it's running fine..but it's old,,,and Well..I just like at least a good spare ...

It just seems to be harder to find good quality replacement parts for these older rigs..

I should say reliability is more important to me that exceptional performance.

I have no complaints abgout the original TFI coil..it worked great, obliviously a good hot coil for the motor, and they are still available form FORD so..that's a plus..

but the purist's seem to recommend a DSII coil for a DSII spark box for reliability..so hence my search..anyway..thanks for all and any input, and best wishes for all who still work on what they drive...

Important thing is to install a coil with the correct resistance for your particular application. Are we talking the standard round type coil used for so many years? The blue Bosch coil has proved reliable. I think they are 3 ohms though.

E73Z-12029-A (replaced E3FZ-12029-A) .. Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DG-434) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.

Misc. appliations: 1984/89 F150/250, Bronco & Econoline 300 I-6 (E/F250 under 8,500 lbs. GVWR); 1986 Aerostar V6; 1987/89 Aerostar 3.0L V6; 1987/89 Bronco II & Ranger 2.9L V6.

1988/89 E/F250/350 460 EFI / Myriad 1984/89 FoMoCo Passenger Cars.

Be aware that most auto parts stores sell cheap made in China crap parts.

thank you so much for the part numbers.. My local dealer said unobtainium but I 'll get one if i can....and ditto on the locqal supply box stores...

upon further searching, i have found this number to be actually a TFI style coil, not canister. also the new number is now a DG-470 i understand, both being e-coils. which i CAN use if i cannot locate an oem canister...

we continue..

I assumed the coil was still available from Ford, but Ford recently obsoleted it.

If you buy the coil from an auto parts store, make sure it's made in the USA

The original part number was E3FZ-12029-A .. There are 3 available NOS

The replacement part number was E73Z-12029-A .. There are 2 available NOS (one in CA, the other in NY).

I called the seller in CA to verify if he still has it. He's going to call me back, so I'll let you know.

I am using a standard duraspark module..any coil recommendation? At this time I have both an e-coil and canister mounted and usable.
