'04 Edge, 4:10 open diff at present. RWD, 5 speed manual 3.0. I have an offer of an LSD diff for this truck, out of an '02. Mechanic tells me the diffs will swap with no problem, and backlash will not have to be adjusted. New seals and gaskets will be used. Can anyone see a problem with this? To be honest, I'm relying on what he has told me, I've never swapped just the diff, the whole axle, yes, but never the internals.
Is friction modifier required?
Both are 8.8 axles, and Ford units.
You probably would be better off adding a locker to your open diff. LS carriers can wear to the point they dont deliver the performance you expect.
That being said if its free and in good shape it should swap over using your original carrier bearings and shims and be close on backlash but you better check to make sure. Also friction modifier needs to be added per fords spec.

Great! Just what I needed to hear. I'm getting the unit for next to nothing, basically just getting it out of the way. So all in all, it's a whole cheaper than a locker.
Friction modifier it is.
Thanks.
verify the new diff is 28 splines first. out of an '02 what? shall we assume a Ranger?
in '02 there was an option on the Rangers of FX4-level II. those had 31 spline rear axles and a Torsen limited slip differential. Torsens do not use friction modifier. Those are kind of scarce, so you will probably get the the regular friction pack type of LSD.
if it is a Torsen, and you don't want it please message me. otherwise, good luck and keep on truckin.

Ya, it's out of a Ranger, and not a Torsen. That was the first question I asked when it was offered to me.LOL
I'll likely be seeing my mech tomorrow and I'll ask more questions, he told me it would fit/work, but ya, he might not know the ins/outs on these Rangers like here.
