There should be a metal tag on one of the bolts that holds the differential cover on. There will be a series of numbers then someting like 4 10 88 if it says that then you have an open (nonlocked) rear carrier. If it says 4L10 88 then you have a limited slip carrier wether it be a clutch pack or torsion. There should also be a axle code on the driverside door pillar of the truck. That will be good unless your truck has had a gear swap. What year is your truck btw?
I wouldn't run a locker. A good LS differential is all you need. Torsen/ Detroit Locker/ Eaton and many others make a perfectly good LS diff. I hear the Detroit Tru-Track is really good.
You can also pull a limited slip from a explorer Ive been told by another website. Thinking of it myself. Ive read that a explorer came with 31 spline axles, disc brakes and a limited slip and will bolt right in place btw get the master cyclinder for a explorer.
Im sorry you have a 4x4 shouldnt you have a limited slip already? No I was talking about totally swapping out rear axle out for the Explorer one. Thats was my plan.

No way is the Explorer just a "bolt-in". Explorers mount the springs underneath while the Rangers mount on top. Have to move the perches, reset the pinion angle, get new shock brackets. My 2000 4x4 had an open rear end but I installed a Richmond "No-Slip" for Winter traction. Liked it so much bought one for the 4x2.

There is also a difference between the explorer and the ranger rear ends that nobody has mentioned. The explorers are a 31 spline axle and the rangers are a 28 spline. There is no swapping out the center section between these rear ends and expecting your current axles to be used. Unless you have new axles made. Now the FX4 level 2's have the correct spring pad placement and are also 31 spline and most were 4.10 gears. There is also no difference in the master cylinder either.
