I purchased a 1989 Ford ranger xlt with the Lima 2.3 and i've finally discovered whats wrong with the truck it looks to be a head gasket because i filled the radiator to top and checked oil and it was milky and the water kept dissapearing. I can pick up a gasket for 30 bucks but how hard it is to change? should i replace anything else? The truck was sitting for 5+ years so it defiantly needs a tuneup and all fluids replaced. what else should i do? also it ran for the first time when i first got it a couple days ago and now it wont start i'm assuming cause of the water in cylinders?
well since you will have apart timing belt if so equiped, new water pump maybe the devices that tension the timing belt, probably new plugs and wires at a minimum. I would also recommend new hoses uper/lowere rad mheater hoses and any other incidental hoses if there are any. check vacuum lines for brittle weather checking R&R as needed. Oh new t stat also, definitely an oil change with filter, also I would do fuel filter. Dont forget that you will need a complete gasket set for the intake, exhaust, valve covers might also need new valve stem seals. This does not say its easy but should be unless OHC engine which is another matter. also new radiator cap fluid etc.
