I am trying to reassemble a 51 3 speed synchronizer and having some trouble. The synchro clips (inserts) were damaged and fell out when I disassemble the transmission, so I am not sure how they were installed.
The Ford manual says install the inserts and then the retaining ring. Based on my attempts and how the brass synchro rings go together This does not seem to work.
Before you assemble it, take a close look at the inserts. I bought some new ones and the ends are made by folding down the material. But the ends' edges stuck out beyond the long sides of the inserts. I filed them down til they were flush with the sides, and it seems to make shifts smoother.

Nice pics, Keith!
Ross, I did notice the new ones I got were slightly extended. I will be sure I even them up before I put them in tomorrow.
