Transmission Binding Engine -- Very frustrated.

Guys... I've had a hell of a day.

Putting the final parts into my engine rebuild, go to start it and I hear a "click" and nothing. Batteries, starter and solenoid are all reading 12.9-14.0v but the starter refuses to budge the engine an inch.

Over the past 6 hours, in which I managed to break my thumb. (no, not even joking) I've figured out that for some reason, when I bolt the bellhousing all the way down - the flywheel no longer turns. If I back it out, everything rotates fine.

Does anyone have any ideas? This truck has beaten the s**t out of me today and I'm on the verge of giving up. I've tried backing the bolts out and clamping them down multiple times. It seems fine until I get to about 1/4" and then everything tightens up.

Assuming this is an auto, you don't have the convertor seated completely. It is not in the pump.

Sorry, yes - it is an auto, E40D.

Can you explain a little more? I'm not sure I understand "it is not in the pump"

Is there a trick to getting things seated correctly. I thought once all the dowels on the bellhousing were lined up things would kinda "fall into place" when you tighten it down.

Torque converter or pump shaft isnt seated correctly. Its common error. Pull it back out unforunately.

A Torque convertor has 3 engagement points. The stator support, the input shaft and the pump. When the convertor is seated, there will be clearance between it and the flexplate. Usually around an 1/8" give or take. To seat the convertor, you need to remove the trans (or engine) and spin, wiggle, and push until it seats fully into the trans.
Hopefully you have not damaged the pump by forcing the engine and transmission together....Good Luck

Often when the torque converter isn't fully seated and the trans is bolted to the engine both the torque converter and the pump are damaged. You should pull the trans out and inspect the converter and the pump for damage.

Ugh! OK. I read up on torque converters after the additional info was provided. What a PITA!

Thanks for the input guys. I have to heal up a bit before I can get back underneath there, but I appreciate all the advice.
