I have a new 2017 F150 and want to install an after market brake controller. I have the tow package minus the factory TBC. I understand the harness to connect to is under the dash behind the stock change holder. I'm having trouble finding this. There's a cable in the area but seems firmly attached. Am I in the right area and are there any other suggestions?

If we had a user friendly search you would be able to find all the info you need. I don't use a brake controller. That being said all I know about them is that there's a short pigtail in the glove box that I assume bypasses the OEM controller. If you can find anything here by searching you can get all your questions answered.

On second thought I'm not sure if this is the forum that I saw this discussed extensively.
Pull down the panel under the steering collumn.
Then take out the 4 bolts 5/16", that releases the metal plate,
Now just reach behind the spot for the factory controler, unsnap it and it comes out.
Plug your controller in and your done.
There is no need to take the center of the dash apart
for an aftermarket TBC, there should be a pigtail provided with your truck, the pigtail connects to the aftermarket controller and plugs in to the connector behind the pocket under the pro trailer assist ****.
Why go aftermarket? I got an OEM TBC for $83 shipped.
OEM TBC is not plug and play, it will need to be programmed either by Forscan or a dealer (forscan is cheaper). The truck has to be "told" it has a TBC.

You are correct and I forgot to mention the programming side of it.
OK, most of my questions are answered in the thread. I am looking at a 2018 F150 with a trailer tow package, but no TBC. What is the part number and cost?
Hello. If I can jump in here with my 2017 2.7 EB XLT with 302A Package. It has the Class IV hitch and the 4 pin and seven pin plugs but not the controller. So if I get the OEM controller, all I have to do is follow these (and other) instructions and plug it in and either get it flashed or buy an OBD II connector and do it myself with Forscan? No other wiring required? The is the best price I found. Is this what I need. Thanks. Raleigh Sanford.

That's what we did. Took me about 45 minutes to plug in the controller; mainly because my fat hands didn't fit in the space very well.
I purchased my TBC on E bay From Holly Ford In Holly Michigan $89.00 Then Purchased OBD Link MX from Amazon $62.00. Finally went to forscan.org to get the software that I needed. All said with tax was under $160. The TBC took about a half hour to install and activating the TBC only took 5 minutes. (After installing the extended license that you need to make the changes).
I saved a lot of money considering most Ford dealers in my area wanted $350 to $500 to do the same job
