So I'm looking at a new vehicle for the wife. It's either going to be a 2017 Explorer or a 2018 Expedition. I want her to get the Expedition, she thinks it's too big for her to handle.
I noticed the Expedition comes with the Auto Start-Stop Technology. I know this can be turned off by going through the in-dash menu every time you get in the vehicle. My question is, can it be permanently disabled? Through FORSCAN or any other method? If not, this a deal breaker for me on the Expedition.
The 18s havent came out yet so noone would rele know how to answer that question. You can jump on the f150 forums, thats a real common thing thats talked about there. I know with the f150, sport mode locks out that feature, but from what i ve seen the new expy wont have a sport mode. I still dont kno why just pressing a button is such a bother for some people. Has she driven a 17 expedition at all yet, i think shed greatly appreciate the comfort increase from the explorer. The current expy is way better than an explorer, i would see if you can get a good deal on a loaded 17 limited or platinum model if you can get over the feature loss and old interior(still very comfy though). I can just imagine how much more better than new expy will be over an explorer.

Reason: Missed a question
Each model year is specific and the big 3 are already eliminating the ability to shut off the start/stop software.....but that doesn't mean the aftermarket won't have a solution soon to be seen
From looking at the 2018 sales brochure, the Driver Selectable Terrain Management System (TMS) includes a Sport mode among the 5 modes for 2WD and 7 modes for 4WD. I won't get delivery on the one I ordered until the week of 11/13, so I can't say how the owners manual will describe what happens in Sport mode.

Reason: fat fingers and small keys

Here is how to disable auto stop start from a cut and paste from the 2018 owners manual. accessed on line.
Disabling Auto-Start-Stop
E181352
Press the Auto-Start-Stop button located on the center console to switch the system off. The button will illuminate. Deactivating using the button lasts only 1 key cycle. Press the button again to restore Auto-Start-Stop function.
My 2016 S7 had a button on the dash that would keep start/stop off permanently. The wife's Q5 Hybrid doesn't even have a button to disable it I believe. But with a hybrid it doesn't always need the gas engine to get rolling. I wish Ford would implement it like Audi did - we humans can make up our own minds!!
The 2018 models indeed have a sport mode, which locks out the auto start/stop. Plus, most f150 owners prefer sport mode anyway because of the firmer shifts and more aggressive throttle and sound.
