On the way to work I was blowing mass tranny fluid from where the torque converter is. Last year had the same problem and the converter seal was bad. The guy rebuilt the trans. And costed me 1800 bucks with a 2 year warranty. It happened again this morning and had to have it towed back to the shop. This afternoon he tells me its the converter itself that is leaking. I thought they were sealed units. Correct me if I'm wrong, please, it would be the seal that is part of the trans. he rebuilt not the converter. I don't think it would have a groove in it after only a year from the seal. I think this guy is trying to soak me for some cash. The seal should be under warranty and to the best of my knowledge converters don't leak seals do. By the way no overheating, slipping or strange noises from the converter just a bloom of smoke and oil. Thanks.
Converters are made by man. Nothing made by man is perfect. The converter CAN fail. It isn't a common problem, but the converter can develop a crack and leak. I can't tell from here if that is what happened here or if the new seal failed.
I'll ask to see the converter. I just don't want to pay 600+ for a seal that should be covered by the warranty. Sorry to say you can't trust many people anymore. A lot of these shop are just out to make a buck. Wasn't satisfied with the trans. job in the first place a year ago. Doesn't shift into overdrive till I reach 45 mph and he said that is the way it is supposed to be. Kinda has me by the gonads, he has my truck on a lift torn apart but can't afford to get screwed.
The transmission has nothing to do with when it shifts. That is controlled by the computer. If it doesn't shift to overdrive until 45 MPH that's because the computer is telling it to do that. Unless they reprogrammed the computer when they rebuilt the trans the rebuilder didn't cause this.
Then is my computer going bad or is that normal? I thought it was an adjustment in the trans. I guess i didn't realize computers run the world now. I think old school too much and need to get with the times. Thanks for your help. will i need to break in the new converter or can i put right heavy work. wanted to pull the boat to the lake tomorrow for the last time this year.
