Emissions

Anyone have an idea on emissions test for 7.3l? I have a 2002 with a TS 6 Chip and also equipped with a 4” straight pipe axle dump. I heard they plug stuff up and test things, then I also read stuff on opacity test. Would they plug into the PCM? If so, I think I have a problem since my TS Chip is in the way.

Here in Colorado they test for opacity, I've had readings around 10% and I believe 30% is the limit. The Opacity is only attached to the tailpipe. I'd be willing to bet each State is different, Google diesel emissions in your State.

Yeah we can't help you without your location.

CA is easier than it sounds, but even that depends on which county your in.

Here is Pima County, Arizona it's opacity plus a visual to see if anything is unplugged under the hood and they look for the non-catalyst sticker. Sometimes they waste time looking for the cat with a mirror before checking for the sticker.

You don't state your location. It matters a lot. For me in NE Cal. writing up the bill for the test takes longer than the test itself.

So what do they do in So Cal?
I'm in LA county.
Are they going to ding me for the air filter, or detect the after market 6 pos switch?

6 position switch-yes they will. I hide mine under the dash for smog checks. Air filters and the like AHEAD of the turbo are not subject to smog requirements. At least they were not the last check I had. A modified exhaust will fail if there was/needs a CAT. 99.5 - 2003 PSD with auto trans did not have a CAT. Manual trans did. Don't know if that is the case for the F-450 and up.

San Diego County is visual, OBD-II, and opacity.

My shop pops the hood, does a visual to make sure it still has stock-ish components, hooks up to my OBD-II to make sure all of my sensors are working then does the opacity test. They start up the truck and rev it up once to "clear its throat". Then they do 3 revs in succession while looking in my rearview mirror. Too much smoke and it fails. How much smoke is too much? Don't know. It's a judgment call by the technician who has been to the class.

I've passed every test since they started it. My last test (almost 2 years ago) went off without a hitch. Here are the mods I've got that might be an issue: FRx, 6 position chip, 6637, Turbomaster wastegate controller (no more red/green lines) and a 4" MBRP (with muffler). The rest are internal or not related to the engine/emissions. I've had no problems yet. A few years ago I was in a rush and tried a different place and they told me I would fail with the 6637 even though I showed him the state instruction showing it was legal. Needless to say I never went back to them.

I stand corrected on my smog check. I forgot that they check for stored DTC's, but no opacity "test" - so far at least.

2000 F350 manual, no CAT from factory! Snohomish county Wa. Opacity test only. Maybe Ca trucks are different, not sure.

Not sure why folks post up like this. OP is in TN, and like every other state, TN has a DMV or similar agency web site with all kinds of info:

Important Information - TN.Gov

For $9 he might pass or get his answers as to why not, and one way or the other will be on the way to being done with this.

Don't matter what CA does, or what MT doesn't do.

Thanks
in So Cal, the most important thing is not to be labeled as a gross polluter.
If you do it will follow you around like a black cloud! The send you to special inspection stations.
