Hey Guys,
I bought another van, This one is a 1987 E150 conversion van.
It's not in bad shape but the Ac is not working.
It has rear Ac also.
Being old it has R12 in it and I want to convert it to 134a.
I've read the conversion kits sometimes don't hold up and can cause problems in time.
Is this correct?
Or should I be planning to change out the compressor, Drier, Condenser and other items.
We plan to keep this van and use it as a camper with a lot of mods.
Thanks for the help.
Calvin
I think it's a question of the condition of the system pre-conversion and also the care taken in conversion. You want to have a shop pump out the old refrigerant and any compressor oil they can get out and then refill with the correct oil for 134a if you want to be sure you will have the most reliable system. Of course, if your compressor is 30 years old anyway, the seals do eventually fail so this is the time to change it if you thought you were going to.
If the system somehow got moisture in it, you might change the dryer but the compressor is the only real wear item in the system.
