I have a 1990 Ford Aerostar with 85,000 miles and it's in excellent shape.
Recently I took the van to Gemini Goodyear because the aircondition wasn't blowing cool enough to my satisfication. Goodyear convinced me that the I needed a new accumulator and could only do this by converting the R12 over to R134a. I agreed to this and went on vacation with the family only to have the airconditioner stop all together about 500 miles later. Returning from the trip and onto Goodyear. Goodyear diagnosed the problem and said I needed a new compressor. I asked what they did in the conversion to ruin my compressor and they denyed all.... They would not even meet me half way on the cost. I then took the van to a Ford dealership on an emergency basis for we are leaving for vacation in one day...
The Ford technician found that the fittings on the high and low side were reversed when the conversion kit was installed. Thus when the system was initially charged the freon went in on the wrong side.
Can anyone tell me if by failing to follow the instructions on filling the system, did the Goodyear garage damage my compressor to the point that made it fail totally?
Thanks for your input.
Jeff
They would have never been able to fully charge the system from
the high pressure side. The biggest problem in the R-12 to R-134
conversions is getting the proper lubrication back into the system.
