Torque converter help.

Hey guys i just had my transmission rebuilt with a new torque converter as well but I believe that the converter is the wrong one. I went to go install it and noticed the TC is flat against the flywheel but there is still about a 1/4 gap around the bell housing. I checked to make sure the TC is fully seated on the shaft multiple times, but still no luck.

The part number is 2648ps Precision New Hampshire. I've looked it up and it looks like thats only for gas engines.

There are three things that must line up to be fully seated, but it sounds like you've got a good 3/4 inch left to go in.

Can't help with the part number, but good luck!

Did you stand the transmission up on it's tail when you installed the converter?

I always did, makes it easy to seat the converter. You can feel it just drop in once it is correctly aligned.

Here just so you don't think I'm nuts, step 7. If you don't have a helper a wall works pretty good.

When i slid the TC off of the shaft slightly, qnd pushed it back on i felt it go in once and than i turned it and it slid in more. Also i went on autozones website and put the part number in and added my truck and it says it doesnt fit tge 7.3 so i changed the engine to the 5.4 and it says it fits. Today ill call the rebuilder and ask again.

The converter in a 5.4L and 7.3L are physically the same size. There are two differences.

The internal fins are different. This changes the stall speed, but in no way changes how it fits in the transmission. The other change is that the 5.4L has four studs to mount to the flex plate, the 7.3L has six studs.

If the torque converter isn't dropping into the trans three times it isn't all the way into the pump. If you bolt it to the engine without being fully seated in the pump you'll need to take it out again and replace the ruined torque converter and ruined pump.

Place a straight edge across the bell housing. There should be a gap between the crankshaft pilot hub and the straight edge.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I just saying that I've changed converters while the trans is still in frame. I guess you could stand the vehicle on end and do it, just that I don't have the ability to do that.

The converter can be seated with putting the trans on end. It's just a lot easier to get it to drop in with the trans upright.
