what year did DEF start in Ford?

I am looking at a 2003 7.3 Power stroke. What is the last year without DEF?

It was when the 6.7 came out in 2011 I believe. 6.4 came out in 08 to 10 no def.

yup 6.4 was up to 2010 model year, then the switch to DEF.

DEF Is a non issue BTW. depending upon use you fill it up every 5-7K miles.

April 2010 was when the 6.7L engine came out and with it came DEF and the SCR

The 6.4L engine in 2008-2010 had the DPF with regens only

And as SEnix says, It's none event. Just no big deal to top off the DEF tank when ever I'm at fuel island that sells DEF at the pump.

All diesel engines built after 2007 are equipped with DPF technology. The last Fords without were the 2007 6.0L. The 7.3L had no EPA restrictions. However the 2003 model year was split with 7.3L in the first half of the run and real junky 6.0L in the last half of the year.

2009 E-350 super duty 6.0L. NO DEF??

This engine, the 2009 6.0L diesel, has no DEF fluid tank or Regeneration systems?? I haven’t purchased an owners manual yet but I have driven this truck locally a few hundred miles. 10,20, 30 miles a day.
I’ve worked as a truck driver in trucks that require manual regeneration: parking , flipping a switch and waiting. And I’ve driven trucks that do that automatically while I drive. (Larger delivery trucks.)
This is my first Diesel engine that doesn’t require DEF fluids. So what happens in this engine as far as the PM from the diesel exhaust?

For model year 2009, it would be a 6.4 diesel motor. For model years 2008-2010 there was the DPF only. It does require the regen you are familiar with. For all the model years, the system worked automatically. You would only see a brief message of "cleaning exhaust filter".

The fact that you don't see it leads me to believe that it has been deleted and reprogrammed. Check under the truck and see if the DPF is missing.

For 2011 and up, def is used and you would fill it at the same location as fuel. When you open the door on the models 2011 and up, you will see two filler spouts. A small one is blue indicating the def. The other is green and of course large for fuel.

Not exactly true on the 7.3 trucks. My 1996 7.3 had a catalytic convertor on it.

Thank you Senix and Stanley Z for your Replies!!
I really appreciate answers from the community. That’s what makes forums great.
My truck is a E-350 Super Duty chassis that was fitted out as a Paratransit vehicle with seats and a wheelchair lift for patient transport. All the stickers under the hood say 6.0L
We bought it used and are making it into a sort of camper/ mobile home. I was curious why this big 6.0L Diesel took no DEF fluid. I also drove a Sprinter that took the DEF fluid but did the rest automatically. Seeing this engine without any DEF tanks was a first. Thanks again for the answers!!

If you do buy a truck with a DEF, make sure it falls off.

The E series never used the 6.4 diesel. They used the 6.0 diesel (all of which were 2007 engines from September 2007) up until model year 2010. These were only equipped with EGR and basic catalytic converters.

DEF is not the problem some guys make it to be. I'm on my phone now. You drive a 92 to 97 truck?

I own two 7.3s and a 2018 6.7 which is on a diet.

I previously owned a 15 6.7 which was also on a diet.

I figured you were a 7.3 or 6.0 guy. Or a deleted guy. Not trying to throw stones here, but again. some guys act like the truck HAS to be deleted or there's GONNA be issues. I'm not against deletes per say, but it's JMO that I don't agree with deleting a well running stock truck. Your money, your ride. Just stating my opinion, not looking to change attitudes or start an argument. That's all.

Well there is something I didn't know. Interesting.
