I just got a rebuild from Don and Larry Hogg, of Cam Sales in something like Whitesburg Ky. I got a S5-42 built with wide ratio gears, for the same basic price as the narrow ratio.. So I got the 5.76 1st gear and not the 4.14. Transmission works fine. They did a good job. No noises, they knew the specs for preload of the tapered roller bearings , and so on. They build the transmissions themselves. 90 day warranty and I am not worried about it.

oops. I was not clear. I stuffed a S5-42 transmission for a 7.3 IDI with the 460 gas engine gearset. Basically everything drops in. My truck is an 88 F250. The 5.76 first gear is handy in a hay field and backing up gooseneck trailers. Nice and slow. I just installed a new Banks Sidewinder turbo, so the gaps between the gears don't matter much. I do most of my pulling in 4th gear, which runs the power straight through the topshaft (1:1) My engine tested at 285 HP at 3000 RPM. The gear steps might not be great with a normally aspirated engine pulling loads.
And yes, I have access to an engine dyno. My EGTs were 1050 ~1100F on the torque rise slightly behind peak power. In rare cases I may need to back off a little or grab a gear. That's just a tiny bit on the hot side.
