My Dana 24 transfer case has popped into N once too many times. The first incident was when I first bought the truck and was driving back from Oregon to California. I was going about 65-70 when it popped out. I pulled over and yanked it back into 2H. A mile later, it happened again. I chalked it up to the test drive when I was trying out the t-case. Last month, it happened again while going up a grade. Then just today going up a hill, it popped out again! I can't say that it only happens going uphill because the first two times were on a relatively flat section of highway. I did a search. No specific info came up, but it points to possibly a warn t-case. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I just tie wire the stick shift in place to the center seat belt bolt? I'm just concerned that if I'm off-roading climbing a hill that it might decide to pop out.
I have had them pop out from hitting a bump, but is sounds like wear on the slider or detents. If you do your own work these are fairly straightforeward to rebuild. I actually like them better than the later new process model.
I had a 57 F-350 that jumped out of 4th gear for years. I just had a bungee cord hooked under the seat and slipped it over the shifter when I got in 4th. I drove it like that for 3 years until I sold it.
Thanks! I'll look into what's involved in rebuilding it. Maybe for now, I'll wire it in place. You said that your t-case would pop out of gear if you hit a bump. Is it possible that a bad tranny or motor mounts may cause that? The shifter rod is mounted to the tranny (4spd) and if the mounts are loose, a bump could possibly move the shifter rod to the t-case, right? Or maybe the mount for the t-case is loose. Someone in this forum mentioned a brace that is available for the t-case.
Yes it was due to the t-case mounts which even in good condition allow way too much lateral movement in my opinion. The last half year of the high boy with the 351 m( the 300-6 may have had it too) engine (early 77) was the only models Ford put it on and that one bolted to the NP t-case but it was a fairly simple design and shouldn't be too hard to fabricate one. I think a radius rod from an old Subaru would make a good one with the rubber bushings. You would just need to make the brackets.
