2005 coolant question.
Last fall I noticed the plastic container on the firewall for the cooling system had a crack in it near the small hose toward the top. I took the container off and fiberglassed a patch over the crack to get by. A few months later I was pulling our camper and the radiator cracked. So, I replaced the radiator and the oil cooler. When I put it back together I stopped at the local parts store and asked what antifreeze I should use in it. The parts guy sold me the car quest brand of green antifreeze and said that is what will work. (the egr had already been done).
This summer I pulled my son and daughters race cars to the track. When we got out to register their cars I left the pickup running. When I got back in it was overheating. After it cooled down I checked the water level and found it low. We carry about 10 gallons of water to the track with us, so I ended up pouring about 3 gallons of water in to get us home.
We haven't driven the pickup much since then so I haven't added more coolant, still just running mostly water. Last night it got down to about 28 degrees so it is time to get the antifreeze level back up.
I just went out and checked and it is low on water again. The degas container that I had fiberglassed has a crusty buildup around it, so I am guessing my fiberglass patch did not hold and it is leaking again. I am not noticing any water leaking when it is running, but once in a while last month I thought I could smell a coolant leak.
So, now for my question. All I have is the green antifreeze. Next week we are leaving for a 400 mile round trip. All we have in my town for a parts store is the car quest parts store. The next closest place to get anything is 60 miles away. Is the green stuff good to run in this pickup? I will probably be draining, flushing and fixing the container in the next month so if I do use the green it wont be in for more than a thousand miles.
