As the temperature starts to drop in my neck of the woods (eastern Washington) I am noticing my 68 f250 with the straight 6 is having some trouble starting. I have to crank it a couple time before it starts and was wondering if anybody has any tips for me? This will be my first winter with it and I'd like to continue driving throughout. Thanks for the help! She is coming along nicely as I continue to replace old parts and make repairs!
Have you rebuilt the carb? If the carb is freshly rebuilt and in good running order just give the gas two pumps before you crank it and should start right up pretty easy. Also do you have a manual or electric choke? If you have a manual choke make sure it is closed on cold starts or if it's electric make sure it is closing when the engine is cold and opening when the engine warms up. Try replacing the fuel filter for a new fresh one

Which carb do you have? If you disassemble it you will need a rebuild kit to put it back together. Sounds like you have never rebuilt a carburetor before? It sounds a lot more intimidating then it is. Do you have a picture of your carburetor and truck?

lol you are correct on that! I just got this truck within the last month and am pretty unfamiliar with it. Still trying to learn the ins and outs. I'll post a couple pictures. Thanks for your help

no problem, but if you can take a picture of the carb you have I or anyone else on here can point you in the right direction. congrats on the truck by the way. the more you work on it the bigger your bond and love for it will come

Not sure what happened here but the photos were inserted weird from my phone.
Good looking truck!!! I have to say I wasn't expecting to see a single 1 barrel carb!! Looks like a Holley 1940 carb.
The fuel inlet in the front looks like someone used jbweld or something to stop a leak I will guess, but you do have leaks and are in definitely need of a rebuild!! That should fix your problems with starting and even smooth out when driving it. 1 barrel will be very simple to rebuild too.. Just have two can's of carb clean a wire brush and a rebuild kit and take your time. Take pictures as you take it apart so you can go back and look at them for reference when putting it back together if you don't remember something.

Make sure you are using the proper starting technique. I know this seems obvious but many people today have no clue how to start carb'd vehicles let alone in the in the cold.
Be sure sure to depress the throttle to the floor at least twice instead of just the once when it is warmer out. Also Be sure the choke is actuating when cold and adjusted properly. And the idle mixture screw is properly set.
If the choke it working, adjusted correctly and you are following the starting procedure and the idle mixture screw is properly adjusted the truck should fire right away. If all this is good and it still does not start right up be sure that your plugs, dist cap, points and ignition wires are in good condition, If all this checks out then contemplate a rebuild.
It is always preferable to rebuild your existing carb then to buy reman as you know all the bits are matched to that carb, sometimes when carbs are rebuilt all the bits for several carbs are tossed in to one batch and bits can get mixed up between carbs. Even if you buy a reman it is highly advisable to keep your original carb if it is the original one that came with the vehicle from new as yours is. Just consider the core charge part of the cost of getting the reman carb.
The carb on your truck is an Autolite 1100 it was the least reliable of the Autolite carbs.
That's not saying it is a bad carb cause they are not and were far better than many 1BBL's on the market.
Some of the issue with the 1100's are that they would experience inconsistent operation due to the power valve design, and could have rather fragile castings, they were replaced with the Carter YF-YFA in part because of this reason.
But being an Autolite carb means it is stupid simple and easy to rebuild.
Mike has a good series of videos on rebuilding the the 1100.
Be aware that the 1100 came in a few different configurations with a spark control valve for load a matic distributors, and or a dashpot and or auto choke, yours has none of this stuff, and may not exactly match the one in the video.
