Have any of you had problems with the 1991 thru 1994 Explorer 2 DOOR'S mirror control switch shorting and catching the door panel on fire?
There is a NHTSC bulletin on this problem, but according to Ford it only applies to the 4 door Explorers. My 1994 2 door went up in flames, and Ford will not help, of course.
At salvage I found a 92 with a charred switch, and it was a 2 door.
The fix per the service bulletin is to add a 10 amp fuse in the power line to the switch. On my vehicle it burned the door panel, seat, carpet, dash, headliner, trim, wiring to dome light/sunvisor mirror, sunvisor, and broke the driver window, and windshield. Of course it smoked the entire inside of the vehicle.
You don't have to be in the car when the short occurs. My wife was inside the doctors's office when it caught on fire. I found one case on the net where one shorted and burned down a parking garage.
