The E4OD in my truck has one foot in the grave what manual 5 or 6 speeds would bolt up without to much trouble

That transmission is 100% electronic controlled, any faulty sensor can trigger limp mode. More details why you state "one foot in the grave"?

Based on your profile your 1994 F150 will most likely have a 4R70W transmission. That was most common for your model/engine for that model year.

It is also electronic controlled.

Sounds like the range sensor is bad or the wiring has an issue. Does your speedometer work? If it doesn't work right I would look at the vss sensor.

Thanks for confirming yours is an E4OD, but your symptoms are most likely electronic related. Have you ever run the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests and Stored Code (CM) display?

If you haven't done so get some gauges for a line pressure test. The test procedure is relatively simple, you need to establish if the transmission is pushing the right amount of fluid around, given that you stated there are no codes stored in the memory. After that, drain the fluid from the pan through a white cloth and check for metal debris/clutch material.

At the very least you should get a System Pass Code 111 for the KOEO tests and the same for CM (stored codes). Anything less means you may have a bad computer or the data link pins are corroded.
