Turbo Timer?

Any way for a FORD Dealer to add the turbo timer option? XL and XLT's have the option. My Platinum would like this

Excuse my ignorance but what is a turbo timer option? Never heard of it or seen it in any ford 2017 super duty sales or ordering literature.

Turn off the truck and it will run for 5 or 10 min to cool off the turbo. I will post pics from the options list

I was just wondering this myself. I'm really surprised Ford doesn't put this on all diesel trucks to possibly save themselves some warranty work. The owners manual states to allow it to cool but most people don't have time to just sit in their truck and wait when they get to there destination.

I'm not clear on what specific "option" the OP is questioning here ...

I see that Ford has a "shut down timer" in the SD options, but that's basically a fuel savings timer ( options are 5, 10, 15, 20 min). I don't have one, so I don't know exactly their engagement sequence and parameters. If it is active, can it be deactivated? Or if "off", do you need to "engage" it?

I don't think it's a "turbo timer" specifically for the purpose of diesel turbo cool down. I think it's a fuel-management technique to help reduce idle times in company/municipal vehicles. And it's available on both gas and diesel SDs.

Or, are there two different options, and I'm not aware of one?

Looks like your probably right. I was thinking it kept the truck running after you turn it off and exit but I guess not. Here is what the owners manual states:

Your vehicle may be equipped with an
engine idle shutdown system. This system
automatically shuts down your engine
when it has been idling in P (Park) or N
(Neutral) for five minutes (parking brake
set) or 15 minutes (parking brake not set).
When the engine idle shutdown process
has started:
• A chime sounds and the information
display will show ENGINE TURNS OFF
IN 30 (seconds) and start counting
down
• You can restart the five or 15-minute
timer by changing the position of the
accelerator pedal, brake pedal or the
park brake within the final 30 seconds
• When the timer reaches zero, the
engine shuts down and this message
will appear in your information display
ENGINE TURNED OFF
• One minute after the engine has shut
down, the electrical system simulates
key off, even though the ignition is still
in the on position, initiating normal
accessory delay period
• You must move the ignition to the off
position to reset the system before
restarting your vehicle.

Complete waste of money and effort. This topic has come up several times in the past 6 weeks. It is not needed.

If it was, we'd see a rash of turbo failures and I'm not aware of any on this forum in a long long time.

Its common sense, and good practice with any turbo-charged engine to allow the turbo to cool following extended or heavy use (towing, hard acceleration, etc...). 2-3 mins of idling or casual driving easily does the trick.

I also let it "cool down" after hard driving, heavy loads, etc. And I also use full synthetic oil to help avoid coking and oil breakdown. Old habits from my semi driving and heavy equipment operating days. Although on my wife's F-150 Ecoboost there is no recommended "cool down" period at all.

Page 181 of the Ford Owners Manual does recommend a cool down period also under certain conditions, see below...

On my previous truck (an '02 7.3 liter) I installed a device called Turbo Temperature Monitor (TTM). It monitored the turbo temperature and would keep the engine running (after the key was removed and truck locked) until the turbo temp dropped to 300 degrees, then shut the engine down.

In contrast to the turbo timer, which keeps the engine running for a set period of time, the TTM kept the engine running until a set cool down temperature was reached.

Modern turbo's are both water and oil cooled, so there is no practical need to allow them to cool off unless you are charging up the Rockies and decided to pull over and take a break. Common sense would dictate you let the turbo come down in temp a little, but after running several turbo diesel vehicles for 20 years with EGT's on all of them, I never needed to let mine idle for more than 30 seconds after a hard pull before temps dropped below 400F. Above that temp, coking becomes a concern, but again, by the time you've found a parking spot or pulled into the neighborhood, your turbo is well below that temp which is why neither Ford, Ram or GM recommend a cool down period. Get an EGT so you can monitor temps yourself. In addition to a boost gauge, it is excellent indicator of how hard your engine is working and /or how well it is performing.

Pull up, kill engine, jump out, use remote start on key fob to start truck. Truck has only been shut down a few seconds as you jumped out. Truck will run for how long you have your remote start programmed for. Then you can double that time from the key fob. I have mine set at 5 minutes time. Try it before you go spending a bunch of money when you already have something that will work.

A turbo timer is completely useless and has been proven many times over to not be needed.

Just shut it off it's fine
