fuel gauge not working

fuel gauge not working
It shows way past full all the time.
Pulled the power supply to the sender from the gauge and measured the voltage. It was 8 volts.
Pulled the ground wire from the sender off at the ground post on the frame, put a voltmeter in series to the ground and got no volts.
Sounds like the sender is pooched.
Not looking forward to changing that.
I changed the gas filter and could see the filter element looked gummy.
Has anyone else had a problem with certain brands of gas ruining the senders? I remember Shell in Canada having to pay to replace ruined senders because they had a problem at the refinery that produced fuel that left gummy deposits.
If this is the case, is there an additive I could try that might clean things up, rather than replace it?
Thanks, Randy

I have a similar problem, except the gauge starts out normal until level drops to about 3/4, then it's pegged at full for a while, then it starts reading normally again at about 1/4. I was thinking maybe corrosion causing a bad contact in parts of the rheostat on the sender. But I suppose it could be gummy build-up as well.
Whatever solvents you try, use it with as little fuel in the tank as possible, to try to increase its concentration. I hear Berryman's B12 or Gumout is supposed to dissolve gum in the tank. That's what I'll be trying.
