Electrical mystery
Just picked up a 2000 ranger 3.0, bare bones rwd. Drove it home and stopped for gas and when I attempted to start it turned over but wouldn't start. Ok so no big deal, grabbed some cables and got a jump. As I got on the road again I noticed the voltage meter for the battery was hanging near the bottom, occasionally jumping up then going back down. By the time I got off the highway, the meter was just about bottomed out and when I pulled up to a stop the lights and gauges began to cut out but the engine continued to run. As I pulled away from the light, I got a boost to the electrical system, got to my destination and parked it. Dead again. Belt tension is fine, just had it inspected a few days ago and it started and drove fine. I would think if it was a bad alternator the engine would cut out as well as loss of accessory power once the level drops that low? Could this be a bad battery or is this definitely an alternator. Alternator was replaced two years ago on this truck, in case that matters. Gonna take a walk across the street to have the battery tested after work just wondering if I should pick up an alternator while I'm at it.

Check the voltage across the battery with a volt meter with truck running and nothing on,,,then check the voltage again with headlight ,,wipers and AC on or at least heater blower motor and see what you get,,,should be around 13 and a half with nothing on and close to 14 and half loaded with lights and blower on
