ok i bought an 89 f-150 last saturday, filled it up and began to check the milage, filled it up this mornin got to school, and it is gettin 10.8MPG, the truck is a 2wd, 302 AODit slips going into overdrive but doesn't seem to slip then(cruises at 60 is 2000RPM) can anyone help? i'm putting on new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs this weekend.
Didn't say how many miles it had. Might check the oxygen sensor, I had a similar problem and improved from about 12 mpg to 16-17 after plugs/cap/wires and O2 sensor. Don't know which one made the most difference, but I think O2 sensors should be replaced every 80,000 miles or so.
It is screwed into your exhaust just ahead of the cat, can't miss it. Spendy though, about $70-$80.
was this highway driving? your doing good to get 9-12 around town and 17-19 on the highway. so many things affects this- be sure tires have correct air pressure, one's driving habits has a lot to do with it, running the a/c, carrying extra weight or a camper shell, axle ratio, and of course a good tuned engine & air filter.
LAST EDITED ON 01-Nov-01 AT 10:38 PM (EST)[p]dog, can't belive i didn't think about that(duh!) it has 122,573miles as it sits in the driveway so i guess i'll change the cap rotor etc, then it it is no better do the O2, but wouldn't it send a code to the ECU and make the check engine light come onit the O2 sensor was bad? thanks for the help, Pross it was mostly highway drivin, i live 5 miles from school so fuger 5 miles at 60-65mph and then the school is 1/4 mile down a 45mph road. i went to town a couple times 13miles on the high way from my house, and mostly went aroud at 55(we have a loop that is like a mini interstat).

When I did my front brakes on my 92 4X4 I decided to check the bearings since the truck was getting terrible milage and seemed to take extra power to get it going, The grease was black and came off the inside of the rortors in chunks. So I cleaned it all out and put new inner and outer bearings on the vehicle and the milage went up 3 MPG.
Does it have stock size tires? If the tires are larger diameter than stock, it will drop your "apparent" gas mileage but may actually be the speedo not being cal'd to the tires. Just a thought.
YEP...31's are taller and will cause your speedo to be off by about 6.5% from stock. So factor in another 6.5% to your miles driven before figuring mileage...prolly be another 2 mpg or so.
