4x4 shift in progress

2008 Ford Expedition. When I start my vehicle the message "4X4 shift in progress" appears. It does go off after driving a minute or two. Is this a problem that can effect performance? Correctable?

Sounds like an issue with dirty contacts in the shift motor mounted on the back of the transfer case.
