Introduction and my new 65 F250
I'm brand new to the forum and Ford Trucks. Bought this 1965 F250 on ebay a while ago for my daily driver. Took a while to get it shipped and the PO sent the title regular mail, and it of course got lost, so I have yet to drive it. It does seem that everything works except the fuel gauge. It is in very good shape and shows 36k miles which judging by the condition seems totally feasible to me... might even be a forum members old truck as it seems it was well cared for. I have been looking over the forum for a few days and it seems everyone like to examine the warranty tags so I'm posting a pic of mine as well. Thanks in advance! Eric

I'm 99% sure he had the title and sent it,but I could not believe he just put it in a reg stamped envelope... I have not trusted reg mail for 15 years now. I'm hoping it still shows up. It did have a long way to travel. I asked him to mail it instead of putting it in the truck as I did not completely trust the shipper. Thanks... good to be here.

The PO should be able to get one fairly easily as it was titled/registered/plated in his name. The plates are still good and the registration is still in the glove box. We're giving it a few more days, then he said he's go get a replacement and I'll make sure he sends it priority mail this time.

Anything important or worth $$$ - a Title being one of them - needs to be mailed Signature Confirmation or Registered Mail. Keep in mind "Delivery Confirmation" is not the same thing, they will be able to "confirm" it's been delivered but it may have been delivered to the wrong house on a different street. Signature confirmation requires an actual signature, it's more difficult to screw that up.

Welcome to the forum! What stands out to me is the fairly rare locking rear end (B4).
Here's the basic decode:
F25 = 2WD F250
D = 352 V8
R = San Jose assembly plant
71023 = '65 model built in July 1965
129 = Long bed
B = Caribbean Turquoise
F250 = 7500 GVWR
C81 = Custom Cab, Med green crush vinyl, & med green ladder pattern.
N = NP435 4 speed
B4 = Dana 60 4.10 locking rear axle.
74 = Seattle District sales office
4971 = Dealer special order number (custom ordered, probably for the locking rear axle as most came with open gears and the optional oil pressure and ammeter gauges).

Remember that a Domestic Special Order (DSO) would not apply to anything available through Regular Production Order (RPO). The B4 differential is an RPO, not a DSO item, as it is just a Dana 60 4.10 Limited Slip, which is one of the regular options. The 4.10 in this case is even what they referred to as the "Standard Ratio" for an F250.

If they didn't have the exact combination the buyer wanted on the lot, then the buyer had to special order it. Although the options are both RPO, combining both options on the same truck probably meant he had to special order it.

@ 66v8baby and TA455HO Thank you very much for the info! If I remember correctly, the PO purchased it from the original owner. I'm not sure if the engine is original or not. The truck did come with stock valve covers and exhaust manifolds, but from what I have just recently learned here, the engines were black with gold valve covers. Someone also put a 360 ci sticker on the air cleaner... perhaps a 352 bored out? No big deal to me, but I do find the history to be interesting.
The truck also came with small western style mirrors... the side trim, manuals, gasket kit, chrome front bumper, and a few other misc bits. I like the trim, so at some point, I'll try and install it.
@Amish65F100 Thank You!
@bootsmagee Thank You!

If the DSO code has 2 digits:
The purchaser had to order a truck with certain RPO features that he/she wanted if the dealer didn't have one in stock with these features or couldn't dealer trade for one.
Couldn't dealer trade because no other dealer in the area had one, or one was found, but it was too far away (usually 100+ miles).
If the DSO code has 4 or 6 digits: Truck was a Domestic Special Order:
The purchaser wanted certain equipment that was not offered for these trucks as an RPO, or wanted a non standard color.
The special equipment (utility bed, 4WD conversion...for examples) were installed after the truck left the assembly line.
If a non standard color or colors were specified, there would be no COLOR code stamped on the Warranty Plate.
If the paint formula for the non standard color was required, or if a part or parts were required for the special equipment, the dealer contacted FoMoCo w/the 4 or 6 digit DSO.
FoMoCo looked up the order number, passed the paint formula back to the dealer or told the dealer where the parts could be found.
Pic of Warranty Plate in post #1. DSO: 744971
74 = Seattle WA Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
4971 = Domestic Special Order.

And btw: The rear axle with Limited Slip was an RPO and 129 does not decode to "long bed." It only decodes to 129" wheelbase.
Just because you can see a bed in a pic, doesn't mean it was there "as original."
Back then, the type of "back of cab" equipment was not specified in the VIN or in any code stamped on the Warranty Plate.
The series code (1st 3 digits of the VIN) thru 1972 only decodes to F100 or F250 2WD or 4WD and that's it. Or to F350 thru F1100.
1973 was the first year that, for example: F10 decodes to F100 2WD pickup.
