Oil change and oil type

Hi folks, I would like some opinions from the experienced Ford engine people on this site. This concerns 2017 6.2 gas engine.

I like to do my first oil change early (1,000 miles) and I am debating on using full synthetic vs. the synthetic blend. The school of thought before synthetic oils were so widely used was to break in an engine for at least 10,000 miles with conventional oil before switching to synthetic. The theory, as I understand it, was to allow the rings to seat properly and to allow other wear surfaces proper break-in. I realize the newer engines are much different and oils have changed, so here is my question to the engine experts on this forum; do you think there is any real advantage to using the synthetic blend formula for the first 2 or 3 changes and then switching to full synthetic? I would like to go full synthetic now, and of course the oil will meet the specifications listed in the owner's manual.

Thanks in advance for you advice.

I used Motorcraft 5W-30 synthetic blend when I did the 1,000 mile oil- and filter change at 1,000 miles. Our truck was delivered six months ago today, and our dealer did the six-month O&F change this morning, also using 5W30 syn blend.

Personally, I'm comfortable with using 5W-30 syn blend in the 6.2 with a 5K miles or six month OCI. However, our truck generally sees light duty use. If I were to haul- and/or tow heavy on a regular basis, then I'd use full synthetic oil at the same mileage/time intervals.

Same here. Bought the oil and filter at Walmart. Old filter was on kinda tight, but all else was quite straightforward.

In another thread others were talking about "tight" oil filter and needing a really good wrench to get off, etc.

Did mine at 1,000 miles....... no problem. Used a standard strap wrench that's probably 30 years old, again no problem. Seemed pretty normal to me.

I am using 5-30 Synthetic Blend also and plan to stick with a 5,000 mile schedule.

BTW...... for convenience ...... I purchased a 5 qt + 2 individual quarts + filter at O'Reilly's for $50.12. Yesterday, preparing for a 2500 mile change, I purchased the same yesterday at Wally World for $34.87. Difference is $15.25 if anyone is interested. I figure a few trips to Wally World will net out justification for Tufskinz or Gatorbacks or something

I had a break-in (as I like to call it) oil change at 1500 miles, Used Valvoline Extreme Blue full synthetic, (as it is on Ford's "approved" list) and a Motorcraft filter. Had it done at my dealer so I always have full service records available in case of a warranty claim. I used to use T-6 Rotella full synthetic in my 2012 PS but at the time of my oil change I did not see it on the approved list. I will go by the oil minder from here on in. Sorry, I just read this was for gasser guys, don't know how to delete post.

Thumbs up

You can "edit" your original post down to "deleted; wrong engine" or something similar. Thanks anyway for chiming in.

I also buy my oil and filter at WW.

I'm an old school guy, but I thought these break-in 1,000 mile oil changes on today's engines, with today's oils, was a thing of the past and actually detrimental. On my last vehicle, a 2007 Honda Accord VTEC I-4, I changed early in spite of the dealer strongly suggesting not too. That car was always an oil burner. In retrospect I suspected it was good for these modern engines an oils to get a bit dirty and scrub in the rings. I don't think there are pieces of metal floating around like in the old days.

Is the general consensus to change the oil at 1,000 miles?

Don't think it's the general consensus, but I do perform a first oil change on all my new vehicles around the 1k to 1.5k mark. Never had a issue so I will continue to do so. One of the main reasons I do so is because I enjoy servicing my vehicles myself and consider it more of a hobby. Do what works for you but at a minimum, go by what the owners manual recommends.
